Your method sounds useful in that it distinguishes between 'harmless' or non-hostile ignorance and racial hatred, but I would argue that 'non-hostile' racism is still racism because it still implies a world view in which race is viewed as a meaningful way to assign traits to people. Behind the statement 'black people like watermelon' lies a whole set of assumptions that suggest that different races of people think and act alike on some fundamental level. That set of assumptions is what my definition of racism aims to pinpoint, not just cases in which that set of assumptions manifests in a manner that suggests superiority or inferiority of one or more races.
